My daughter was such an easy child that when my son came along, it was like learning how to parent all over again. We were not prepared for the hour-long screaming fits or having to avoid public in fear of a meltdown. I spent many hours researching techniques I could use to avoid these meltdowns, or at least end them quickly. We tried weighted blankets, diversions, headphones, and everything else that the experts suggested. Of course, each new technique failed and I was becoming increasingly frustrated. Now that my son is older, we are able to manage his meltdowns through therapy and avoiding triggers. My almost 2-year-old is another story however, and we are experiencing full-blown meltdowns almost daily. Desperate to find a way to calm her down during her episodes, I began my research all over again. During my search, I came across the Calm Down Companion and it really intrigued me. I emailed the company and they were generous enough to send me their plush companions to review.
Airlie Drozdowski became determined to find something that would help her daughter control her outbursts after other methods were unsuccessful. She wanted to use a positive approach and began experimenting with different things. Airlie came up with a glittering product and after seeing it help her daughter, she realized it could help many children. This inspired her to create Tranquil Teddy. Peaceful Puppy came later and with a special child in mind. ChadTough Foundation is a charity that honors a little boy who suffered an incurable brain cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). After losing his battle, Chad’s mother helped create Peaceful Puppy based on the likeness of his plush two puppies. For every Peaceful Puppy purchased, a portion of proceeds goes to ChadTough to fund research and awareness.
Tranquil Teddy and Peaceful Puppy are 12″ plush toys with super soft fur and an illuminated LED ball with glitter inside. The glitter falls for around 75 seconds and the ball stays lit up for several minutes before automatically turning off. It also features a travel mode to conserve the battery. The ball comes in pink, blue, purple, and green or you can collect them all. You can also remove the ball from the plush toy for active play.
When a child faces a stressful or fearful situation, the Calm Down Companion provides a distraction. The familiar face and soft fur comforts them while the settling glitter refocuses their attention until they can regain control of their emotions.
We introduced Tranquil Teddy to the littlest right away since we wanted her to get familiar with it. A few hours after the introduction, she began having a meltdown when I put her blankie in the washing machine. We knew the signs of an impending meltdown so we grabbed the Teddy right away. Within seconds the high-pitched, ear-piercing screaming started to fizzle out. To our amazement, by the time the glitter had settled, she was completely calm. She continued watching the bear for several more minutes until she fell asleep. We wondered if it only calmed her because it was something new, but the next day, we realized this was not the case. The very next morning another meltdown was looming, but we grabbed the Calm Down Companion and it soothed her once again.
To say that the Calm Down Companions have been helpful is an understatement. They are a true blessing for my family. Though she still has occasional meltdowns, the plush toys calm her more often than not and this really helps save my sanity. They are perfect for taking along to the doctor, dentist, school, or anywhere else your child may struggle controlling their emotions. You can find both Tranquil Teddy and Peaceful Puppy right on the Calm Down Companion website. You’ll also find the Purposeful Pawz Journal which helps you gain a better understanding of your child’s emotions.
